After playing a few sessions with my friends using the Pathfinder rules I’ve decided to work on some cross compatible products.  The tweaks made to the rules are minor but do address some of the lower level grind that 4e managed to streamline or standardize on the at-will, encounter, and daily abilities.

While not old school by any stretch I’m definitely going for the farmboy to hero aspect that I’ve always loved in fiction.  The PC’s in the adventures I’m working on are not expected to be the sole center of the universe…at least to begin with.

I will also be incorporating mass battles using scenarios developed using the Warpath supplement  (a great product)  as I’ve always loved miniature games.

Every year I procrastinate all of my tasks and this year is no different.  I’ve got characters to make, maps to make and print, and just general stuff.  Here’s our schedule (Drake and I):

Thursday August 15th

  • Depart at 4:45 a.m. and travel from WI to IN.  We’ll be listening to Eye of The World by Robert Jordan.  I’ve read it but it’s always fun to listen to it.
  • 10:30 a.m. Arrive at Omni Severin
  • 11:00 a.m.  - 1:00 p.m. – Get bearings and cruise Great Hall
  • 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. Title: Teen Champions – Meyerson Academy After School Special
Teenage superheroes go to the local mall after school and super-problems occur. Rules will be taught, younger children are welcome, please bring a parent along to help you out.   This even is run by Barton Stano – a great HERO GM and something I and my son always try to hit.
  • 6:00 p.m. – whenever – muscle way into The Ram, get a growler, maybe meet and greet some people and or run a pickup game of Castles & Crusades with a Goodman Games module.

Friday August 16th

  • Wake up early as always and scarf some foods brought along for the trip.
  • 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Title: Night of the Solstice
Event Description: The town has always had a reputation for attracting undesirables and the solstice has always been a time of evil. This time things have gotten out of control! Players compete to accomplish objectives while chaos reigns throughout the town.  A Warlord miniatures game by Reaper Miniatures.
  • 3:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.  - get familiar with the Great Hall again and pick-up anything we saw the previous day that piqued our interest.
  • 6:00 p.m. – whenever – back to The Ram for a growler refill, meet and greet and go back and re-energize for tomorrow’s Pathfinder events.

Saturday August 17th

  • Wake up early, get the coffee going and run-through my checklist for the Paizo games.
  • 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. – DM The Hydra’s Fang Incident – A Year 1 Pathfinder Society game. www.paizo.com
  • 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. – DM Frozen Fingers of Midnight – A Year 1 Pathfinder Society game. www.paizo.com
  • 6:00 p.m. – whenever – head over to the Embassy Suites for the rpg.net meet up
  • Whenever – meet some members of my old gaming group for some…well…gaming.

Sunday August 18th

  • Wake up semi-early and clean room.
  • Get back on the road for a good nights sleep in my own bed:)

If anyone needs to get ahold of me just email me at naturaltwenty@yahoo.com .  I’ll have my mobile on me the whole time and will be checking emails.

It’s been a busy few weeks.  I’ve started running Pathfinder for the new online group.  This is the 5th total group I’ve run using Fantasy Grounds and I’m going to have to admit I’ve had excellent luck with groups.  Most of the players are 21+ ,usually have careers (or full time students which is really a career) and are technically savvy – plus, and this is the biggest plus they truly want to play.  I only wish my flea-like attention span would not get split by real world intrusions like work:).

I’ve been waiting for a couple SRD/OGL licensing things to get hammered out and one finally clicked – the True20 licensing agreement was finally updated.  Now to start delving into that rules-set.  I’m vaguely familiar with it from running Mutant & Masterminds but there’s obviously some twists.  I think I own all of the True20 products in either print or pdf format (note to self – I’ve got to take inventory one of these days because I know I’ve purchased things twice as of late).

I’m still waiting the d6 SRD to come out from WEG but we’ll have to see how that goes with the Septimus cancellation and have high hopes of putting out a PDF for a simple fantasy game, i.e. heartbreaker, using the rules along with a concise and precise magic supplement – which was severely lacking from the d6 Fantasy Game.

I’m impressed at Paizo’s balls on this press release.  They are, for now, flicking their chin in WotC’s face…and I say good for them.  It’s their risk and they are willing to take it.  Paizo has been the defacto moutpiece of D&D for the past 7+ years with their management of Dungeon & Dragon magazines.  Their outstanding work has shone forth in their Pathfinder line and they are, in my mind, what D&D should be.

So far I’ve been unimpressed with the digital initative that WotC has done and I think that I could run a far better game with existing rules and tool sets.  This is why I’ve announced my running of the Pathfinder: Rise of the Runelords campaign using Fantasy Grounds II.

It is fortuitous that Paizo is also releasing it’s Pathfinder RPG which is a OGL derivative.  I’ll be consuming that in short order to see if I can use it for this upcoming campaign and have the group participate in it’s playtest.
