Greetings and Welcome. Over the past five years I have been a strong advocate of online gameplay using some form of virtual tabletop (vtt) software and voice-over-IP (VoIP) software. I’ve engaged in hundreds of online games in one-shot or campaign style play and met quite a few friends gaming this way.
This medium is currently being embraced by Wizards of the Coast and their pending release of 4th edition Dungeons & Dragons. It is an excellent way to try a new game, expand your gamer base and have a fun time.
Software
I primarily stick to two software platforms. Fantasy Grounds 2 for d20 based games and ScreenMonkey 1.5 for all other games.
Both of the packages allow the hosting PC (the GM’s pc) to act as a server that other players log into. Fantasy Grounds requires that the GM and player’s each purchase a client. ScreenMonkey requires that the GM purchase a client and the player’s use IE or Firefox to share the tabletop.
