Over this last weekend I attended my first Meetup.com D&D session. A few weeks before the meetup I had planned on running UK4 When a Star Falls using the C&C game. It was apropos that I ran this for two reasons:
- UK4 was the first module I ever played where I went to a Friendly Local Gaming Store (flgs) in Fond du Lac as a youngster (13 at the time) and didn’t DM.
- In honor of Mr. Gygax it was fitting that I ran an old school…at least older school, adventure.
Reminiscing – My first flgs was Fantasy Isle – a combination rpg, miniature, comic book and video game emporium in Fond du Lac, WI. Now I was from North Fond du Lac (NFdL), a suburb of Fond du lac with a population of roughly 3500 people. I had to ride a bus that is more like the short tour buses used by airports (it was affectionately called “the tart cart” – an appellation which while not politically correct it was the 80’s afterall) because NFdL did not have a true bus line. This “bus” would take you from NFdL to the Forrest Mall in FDL where you could hook up with the main bus route. The total travel time with the one bus transfer was about 15 minutes tops. I mean it was really only about 3.5 miles from my house to the flgs but c’mon, in the dead of winter who wants to walk that far?
I remember the day my friend and I, Brian Fedenko, went to the store via our bus route and we were making up characters. Having just read A Spell for Chameleon I made Bink, the gnome illusionist-thief. We played with a group of older players who I can only guess were in their 20’s to 30’s including one of the store’s owners named Les. We didn’t get far but we had an awesome time. One of the random encounters was a gambado – which I include every time I run the darn thing – and this was the first time I had ever even heard of the beast so it was very scary.
I never finished playing the adventure and the flgs while cool was still a bus-ride away. I don’t remember the exact time but a year or two later the place was shut down due to their stealing of electricity from the next-door business. I purchased the adventure a week or two after I played part of it and I ran it for my friend and a few other folks. After that I ran it years later for a different gaming group and now just last week I ran it again.
Here are the PC’s I made up for the one-shot. I’m finishing up the other two PC’s for a Rogue’s Gallery type free product for C&C. The event went off without a hitch and there was only one player who seemed to not like the featless/skillless essence of C&C but at least 75% of the people playing were having fun!

Remember the golden days of role playing, when adventures were underground, NPCs were there to be killed, and the finale of every dungeon was the dragon on the 20th level? Well, those days are back. Dungeon Crawl Classics feature bloody combat, intriguing dungeons, and no NPCs who aren’t meant to be killed. Each adventure is 100% good, solid dungeon crawl, with the monsters you know, the traps you fear, and the secret doors you know must be there somewhere.
In The Lost Vault of Tsathzar Rho, a defenseless village asks the characters to slay an out-of-control ogre. Sounds easy enough. But the ogre, who used to be nothing more than a nuisance, has become crazed and psychotic. When the characters arrive at its cave, they find a subterranean portal has connected the cave to a much larger underground complex. Something in that complex has transformed the ogre and many other local creatures into fiendish marauders. In fact, it’s the lost vault of Tsathzar Rho, an ancient wizard and prophet of the Outer Gods, who are gathering their foul minions for battle.
I’ll be bringing 6-8 pregens which will be posted here throughout the week. I’ll also be posting creation rules by 12/30/07 for those that want to make their own characters. We will be using the Gazetteer of the Known Realms and you can get some information regarding the world at the previous link or by downloading:
